October 15, 1946: Enos Slaughter of the St. Louis Cardinals slid home with what would be the winning run in game seven of the World Series. Slaughter scored all the way from first base on Harry Walker’s double to left center. Johnny Pesky, the Red Sox shortstop, hesitated on the throw as Slaughter ran. Pesky said later, “I couldn’t hear anybody. There was too much yelling. It looked like an ordinary single. I thought he’d hold up at third so late in the game.” The Cardinals won the World Series in this seventh game 4-3.
