She interviewed more than 60 students for what ended up being the “I, Too, Am Harvard” project.

As she pored over the transcribed interviews, Matsuda-Lawrence felt she had something valuable to share with a larger audience.

Portraits of some of the students Matsuda-Lawrence spoke with are posted online on the “I, Too, Am Harvard” Tumblr page.

With one exception, none of the students are identified by name.

The campaign has drawn tens of thousands of viewers.

On Friday, a play based upon the personal reflections of roughly 40 students of color will be staged on campus.

With the production, the project’s creators hope to jump start an even wider discussion about racial stereotyping and racial assumptions at Harvard.

“This is not an anti-Harvard campaign, it’s us raising our voices and trying to change Harvard for the better,” Matsuda-Lawrence said.

Black student representation on campus has held steady over the past four years, fluctuating between 10.2 percent and 11.8 percent.
